Programme 2 Special Needs Assistant
Level Level 5
Certification obtained FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Childcare [DCHSC]
Compulsory modules Child Development
Early Childhood Education
Working in Childcare
Caring For Children (0-6 Years)
Communications
Work Experience
(Work experience is compulsory and Learners must secure their own work experience placement)
Additional modules may include Understanding Special Needs
Special Needs Assisting
Occupational First Aid
Teaching Assistant Skills
Montessori in Early Childhood
Care of the Special Child
Human Growth and Development
Nutrition
Word Processing
Possible non-certified modules Leisure and Recreation, Health Education etc.
Progression options Award holders are qualified to work in Special Needs
Duration Two years, full time, Sept 2010-May 2012
Entry Requirements Applicants must be an Early School Leaver;
90% of places are offered to members of the Traveller Community.



Academic qualifications and Experience required:-
  • Leaving Certificate or LCA or FETAC level 4;
  • If you are over 23 years of age you may be exempt from the above academic requirements, however a high level of English, Maths and aptitude for the course are required.

Places are limited and will be allocated on the basis of prior qualifications/ experience, an interview and an assessment test.
Cost There is no cost for the course, some learners may be eligible to receive an allowance.
