LCA - Leaving Cert Applied

Introduction

The Leaving Certificate Applied is a distinct, self-contained Leaving Certificate Programme. It is a two-year full time course. The Leaving Certificate Applied is structured around three main elements-Vocational preparation, Vocational Education and General Education.

This programme is characterised by educational experiences of an active , practical and student centred nature.

Examples of the subjects offered include Graphics and Construction Studies, Craft and Design, Visual Art , Engineering, Social Studies, Hair and Beauty, Information and Communication Technology, Irish, Mathematics and Leisure Studies.

The Leaving Certificate Applied aims to develop the person with an enterprising outlook, self-confidence, responsibility, co-operation, teamwork, problem solving, decision making and independence. Work experience is an important part of this. The Department of Education and science states that one of the characteristics of a successful Senior Traveller Training Centre is a “strong community base and good contact with local agencies”. St’ Joseph’s has built up good links with the community and we are always looking to build on that relationship.

Leaving Certificate Applied participants complete a two week block of work experience out in the community and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all the shops, offices and businesses that have helped make the work experience programme a great success.

The Director of the centre is delighted to be able to offer the Leaving cert. Applied and feels it is a positive step forward in Adult Education in the Clare area.
